Horse Gaits is out now!

Susan Harris’ Horse Gaits, Balance and Movement was published last week and is available now. It is the essential guide to using the principles of good horse movement as the basis for riding and training.

Horses are born to move – a foal can walk, trop and gallop within hours of birth. But not all horses move equally well and the way a horse moves can have a real impact on how you ride. In Horse Gaits, Susan Harris presents more than 300 eye-opening drawings that show you exactly how horses move. She illustrates movement common to all horses, pinpoints movement problems, reveals how a human in the saddle affects a horse’s movement and helps you become a better, more accomplished rider.

Illustrated with 300 colour drawings that show exactly how horses move, illustrating movements common to all horses and pinpointing movement problems. Everything a rider needs to become better and more accomplished.

Horse Gaits focuses on what is common and natural to all breeds of horses, appeals to everyone involved with horses from riders, trainers and, even, competition judges.

‘It is … revolutionary and marvellously illustrated.’

Jilly Cooper, author of Riders

Nagasaki by Susan Southard

On August 9th, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki.

It killed a third of the population instantly, and the survivors, or hibakusha, would be affected by the life-altering medical conditions caused by the radiation for the rest of their lives. They were also marked with the stigma of their exposure to radiation, and fears of the consequences for their children.

Nagasaki follows the previously unknown stories of five survivors and their families, from 1945 to the present day. It captures the full range of pain, fear, bravery and compassion unleashed by the destruction of a city.

We are very excited to see an excellent review of Nagasaki in the TLS. Claire Kohda Hazelton writes that Nagasaki is ‘Beautifully written, unwavering in its confrontation with suffering, and without any censoring of survivors’ accounts, Nagasaki ensures that Taniguchi’s and other hibakusha’s voices are not forgotten.’

As well as these glowing reviews, Nagasaki has received other important endorsements. Jeremy Corbyn wrote: “Susan Southard’s remarkable book… This is indeed a topical but enduringly relevant testament and one that should be read as widely as possible.”

The Monocled Mutineer – Authors Corner

Welcome to the new and revived ‘Authors Corner’ feature of our blog. This series will feature blogs written by our authors on their books. Launching the blog is John Fairley on his book The Monocled Mutineer, of which a new adaptation will appear on the TV channel Yesterday this Sunday. Enjoy the blog below!

Monocled Mutineer cover

It has taken a generation to persuade the broadcasters to show again probably the best Great War drama ever made in this country The Monocled Mutineer.

The series, starring Paul McGann, based on the book by myself and Bill Allison caused such a furore that it was locked away for decades.

The Monocled Mutineer appeared at a time when it was still heresy to suggest that there had been any mutinies in the British Army. Now we know there were quite a lot, though not on the scale of Etaples.

The revival of the series might be attributed to the programme being denounced in Parliament by the Tory minister Michael Gove in 2014.

That brought the story back into the news. A new paperback of the book was commissioned and I was able to write a new introduction explaining how we got the individual stories by seeking accounts from old soldiers still living in the towns from which the mutinying regiments came.

I have seen the series again recently . It stands up wonderfully.

Weed by David Schmader

Today is the publication date of an exciting new book Weed by David Schmader. The debate around weed legalisation has been particularly lively in the past year. From the Liberal Democrats’ general election-proposal to legalise weed from calls from Russell Brand at the Labour Party Conference to an important event run by the Adam Smith Institute at the Conservative Party Conference this week, it seems that everyone is finally taking the issue seriously.

“A witty guide full of history, recipes, safety and legality tips, and medical information.”
—Publishers Weekly

“[Weed] is smoothly written and completely thought out, covering the basics of usage (smoking, vaping, consuming edibles, and applying the substance topically) as well as ‘marijuana etiquette’ (don’t bogart, man!). There are recipes for classic pot brownies and cannabis-infused oil, and humor reigns the day (the advice for scoring includes offering homemade banana bread to the neighbors if you’ve ever smelled pot smoke wafting from their door). It’s irreverent, to be sure, but serious advice includes what do to if you’re high, and don’t want to be, as well as a chapter on safety and legality.”
—Booklist

Weed: The User’s Guide is an encyclopedia of marijuana history, use, and culture for those questions you’re afraid to ask at your friendly neighborhood pot shop…The book is hilarious and entertaining and thoroughly Schmader-y.”

Alexander Hamilton’s Guide to Life

Two centuries after his death Alexander Hamilton is headline news again.

He is one of the most compelling of America’s Founding Fathers, an orphan who came to America with little but ambition. He went on to become a General in the Revolutionary War, created the US’s financial system and is immortalised on the $10 bill.

Combining biography and history with humour, this is advice that has survived for over three hundred years:
Seduce with your strengths
Go to war for your promotion
Being right trumps being popular
Learn from your enemies

Alexander Hamilton’s Guide to Life is a perfect accompaniment to the US musical Hamilton arriving in the UK, about which Barack Obama said “It’s brilliant”.
